Manila, Philippines- The Philippines continues to retain its 7th rank for 2 consecutive years as the deadliest country for journalists, as per the CPJ’s (Committee to Protect Journalists) Global Impunity Index.
In the last 10 years, there have been 13 unresolved killings of journalists in the country. While Somalia remained as the deadliest country among the ten-year index period as per the media watchdog, since 81% of the unsolved cases within the time frame were not held into account, and no one was convicted.
Somalia is then followed by Syria (2), Iraq (3), South Sudan (4), Afghanistan (5), Mexico (6), Philippines (7), Brazil (8), Pakistan (9), Russia (10), Bangladesh (11), and India (12).
Although the Philippines’s rank went down from 5th to 7th in the past 2 years, this is mainly because the gruesome slaughter of 57 victims, were 32 of which are journalists, also known as the Maguindanao/Ampatuan Massacre, was not anymore covered by the 10 year time period of the CPJ’s Global Index.
