Isko Moreno, "adopted son" of Kalanguya Tribe in Nueva Vizcaya

by Kristine Doringo

BAYOMBONG, NUEVA VIZCAYA – On Saturday, the Kalanguya tribe of Nueva Vizcaya 'adopted' Manila mayor and presidential aspirant Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso in a native ritual held in the municipality of Santa Fe.

The council of elders and Santa Fe Mayor Tidong Benito presided over the ceremony.

A black pig was slain and its blood was splattered to ward off evil spirits, as is traditional among the province's indigenous people. Domagoso also smeared blood on his forehead with the knife he used to butcher the pig.

"I would fight for your (indigenous people's) rights and welfare, and I appreciate your support," Domagoso said.

As a token, he was given an inabel, a handwoven cloth of the Kalanguyas.

The Kalanguya tribe members had pledged to protect and assist Domagoso's campaign as an adopted son, while the Manila mayor had promised to advocate for the Kalanguya tribe's rights and welfare.

"The tribes here, not just the Kalanguyas, have a responsibility to protect Isko Moreno as he travels to Malacaang." "Other tribes are here for him as well," Padilla added, claiming Domagoso has the backing of various sectors in Northern Luzon.
